Victim identified

KILAUEA — The search for a Maryland woman swept out to sea on Monday evening was suspended Thursday afternoon.

Police identified the woman as 22-year-old Destiny Marbury.

According to police, Marbury entered the water at the north end of Anini Beach, when she became distressed and called out to her friend for help at about 6 p.m.

The friend, a Kapaa man, jumped into the water to assist her, but he ran into trouble in the high surf and strong rip current. The 37-year-old man was rescued by a good Samaritan and a firefighter. He was treated by responding medics and released at the scene.

Marbury could not be located despite a team of rescuers including Kauai lifeguards, firefighters, police and the U.S. Coast Guard.

Officials are reporting this incident as Kauai’s third drowning this year.
