Since 1996, the Xi Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society has been awarding one Kauai student each year with a $1,000 scholarship.
The scholarship goes to a graduating high school senior who has an interest in pursuing a teaching career, or a student enrolled in an accredited teaching program on island.
“They can serve as counselors, social workers, anything in the educational field, more so than just teaching,” said Lauri Yama, first vice-president of the chapter.
Yama told The Garden Island that while $1,000 doesn’t seem like a lot of money when you consider how expensive college is, it has gone a long way for those who have been awarded the scholarship.
“We really want to see our students have an opportunity to pursue their education,” Yama said.
Scholarship applications are available through the counseling departments of Island School, Kauai High School, Kapaa High School, Waimea High School, Kawaikini Public Charter School and the financial aid office at Kauai Community College.
Deadline is March 3.
