There is an old Korean proverb: When whales fight, the shrimp’s back is broken. It basically means when big boys fight, it’s the little guy who gets hurt.
The Korean peninsula sandwiched between Japan and China has historically been used: diplomatically, militarily, trade, and invaded by its northern borders and coast. Resilient as its people have been through its history, modern-day politics haven’t change much.
North Korea desires to have a long-range nuclear missile that can reach Hawaii and the West Coast of the U.S. The U.S. and South Korea have decided to deploy THAAD (terminal high altitude area defense) in South Korea. THAAD is a defensive radar system should North Korea launch missiles, to detect and intercept.
China views THAAD as the U.S. keeping an eye on its military movements and threatening its security. China retaliates by weakening trade with South Korea. Korean entertainment is taking the blunt of the hit with cancellations of concerts, filming and joint projects in China.
Popular Korean models are changed for Chinese models. Korean cosmetics are under additional scrutiny when exporting to China and 19 Korean cosmetics have been banned. Big Bang who had the concert in Hawaii last October cancelled their concert in Shanghai. China denies that this has any relation to THAAD planned deployment but South Korea doesn’t believe it to be true.
