Carol Yotsuda of the Garden Island Arts Council said she’s never worked on a display as big as the one set up by the NOAA and the County of Kauai at Lihue Airport.
Miyoko Niimi, Bon Moore (weren’t they at the Nippon Maru, too?), and Pete Orbe were still tweaking the displays Thursday night. Carol said those artists have been working on elements of the display for almost the entire month of December before moving to the airport (she said it was like a sauna, working in those exhibit cases) in January.
Jean Souza, the Kauai programs coordinator for the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, said she saw it while coming home from an Oahu trip, and there was a lady who kept studying the exhibit. Jean later found out the lady was a tour guide and offered her more education on the whales.
Airline passengers, mostly departing ones, passed the time checking the exhibits, many getting triggers to memories of whales while here, and others putting whale watching on their bucket lists — it’s whale season!
