LIHUE — The annual membership meeting of the Kauai Historical Society is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the Island School main hall.
In addition to annual reports and the election of the Board of Directors, KHS members and the public can enjoy a special presentation on “Ancient Hulas of Kauai” by Kumu Sabra Kauka.
The chants and hula about the island were first presented by Mary Kawena Pukui, renown Hawaiian cultural authority, to the Kauai Historical Society at a meeting on Jan. 31, 1936.
Kauka will provide interpretation of the chants and Halau Waikahe Lani Malie, led by kumu hula Laamea Almeida, will bring one or two chants to life through hula kahiko. This is a unique opportunity to hear these ancient chants explained.
Rare books and periodicals will be for sale and Hawaiian music will be performed by Mark Rossi.
It is free, donations are welcome.
Membership to the Kauai Historical Society will be available. RSVP online to www.kauaihistoricalsociety.org or call 245-3373.
