LIHUE — Kumu’s Cupboard is a new nonprofit store at which Kauai’s teachers will be able to shop for free when it opens at Kukui Grove Center.
Items available will include school supplies, office supplies, materials for art and science projects as well as student activities, said Elyse Litvack of the Kumu’s Cupboard planning committee.
Shopping hours will be geared to teachers’ schedules.
“We’re anxious for Kumu’s Cupboard to open,” said Stacie Chiba-Miguel, Kukui Grove assistant manager. “A lot of the work being done at the location is being done gratis. With the construction industry doing so well, the donation work is being put on the back burner.”
But Kumu’s Cupboard is finally seeing some light — Litvack said the Kumu’s Cupboard committee is planning a grand opening in January.
“Many educators spend their own money to enhance the education of their students, whether to buy basic school supplies or materials for a special project,” Litvack said.
Grove Farm Company has awarded the Kumu’s Cupboard Committee a matching-grant opportunity, Litvack said. Grove Farm will match donations Kumu’s Cupboard can raise through Dec. 23 to a maximum of $5,000.
Contributions can be made at www.kumuscupboard.org, or sent to Kumu’s Cupboard, P.O.Box 3650, Lihue, HI 96766.
