Live blog: Kapaa Warriors take on Lahainaluna Lunas for the HHSAA Division 2 football title

The Kapaa High School Warriors (8-1 overall, 5-1 KIF) punched its ticket to the championship game of the First Hawaiian Bank State Football Championships – Division II tournament with its 21-14 win over Damien Memorial of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu in the semifinals Saturday at Vidinha Stadium.

Now in the way of the Warriors are the Lunas of Lahainaluna High School, the champions of the Maui Interscholastic League – Division II.

The Lunas knocked off No. 2 seed Konawaena of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation, 28-14, Saturday in the semifinals.

The championship game is set for 4:30 p.m. today at Aloha Stadium.

That’s it! The clock hits zero as Kapaa scrambles to the line of scrimmage. The Lunas defeat the Warriors in a tightly contested game for the state’s Division II State Championship.

Kapaa nearly fumbles on the final play of the half as the clock runs out. At the half, Lahainaluna leads Kapaa 14-0 thanks in part a blocked punt returned for a touchdown by Siale Hafoka. Warriors have some soul-searching to do during the break.

Lahainaluna fails to pick up the first and will punt. Kapaa will get the ball back with no timeouts remaining in the half. Warriors trail 14-0.

Clifton Oliver misses a 34-yard field goal as Lahainaluna takes over the ball. Lunas lead 14-0.

Kiliona Keohuloa runs outside the tackles and into the end zone to put Lahainaluna up 14-0 over Kapaa in the second quarter.

Kapaa’s punt attempt on fourth down gets blocked on the opening possession of the second quarter and is picked up and returned by Siale Hafoka for the first score of the game. 

Lahainaluna leads 7-0.
