Stu Burley used the magnifying glass that belonged to Abraham Lincoln to read the Gettysburg Address Friday during the Veterans Day service. Stu said he got the glass through his great- great-grandfather who was Lincoln’s secretary.
Bruce and Bonna Downs (they said they have a Dr. Downs in Alaska, too) of Palmer, Alaska, were visiting the service for the second time after coming two years ago. Bruce said he is a U.S. Marine and an Eagle Scout after growing up in Kobe, Japan. Bonna is from Cambodia and the couple have been living in Alaska for 45 years.
Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. became one of the heroes spoken of by Capt. Vincent Johnson when he stopped to help Marjorie Works whose electric wheeled cart became stuck in a chicken hole, and mahalo to Major Victor Aguilar (those Waimea JrROTC and band were great!) for noticing that Marjorie’s car’s back gate was open.
Great job to Gen. Mary Kay Hertog and all the Kauai Veterans Council members who made the service a success. Kasey Bernabe, her sister Bailey is Miss Kauai Veteran, was enjoying the refreshments, and kudos to Kauai Coffee’s Jorge DeLeon and Mike Shimatsu for manning the percolators.
