LIHUE — Kelvin Moniz, executive director of the Kauai Independent Food Bank, was overwhelmed by the turnout Saturday at the Kukui Grove Center.
“This is support and the generosity of the people of Kauai is very gratifying,” he said. “We definitely can use the contributions.”
A food collection day at several sites launched the Kauai Independent Food Bank’s 2016 Holiday Healthy Food and Fund Drive that runs through Dec. 30.
The launch was helped by a $1,500 contribution from Kukui Grove Center representing a match for shoppers’ contribution — a dollar for each food item, or canned goods donated.
Leona Perez, KIFB programs manager, said the kickoff netted more than $5,000 and nearly 500 pounds of food.
“We are honored to partner with the Kauai Independent Food Bank for the 14th year,” said Wade Lord, the Kukui Grove general manager. “This is a great opportunity for Kukui Grove Center and the community to help those in need — Contributions can be done at fire stations on the island, or at the KIFB Nawiliwili facility during operating hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mondays through Fridays.
