Visitor drowns off Waiohai Beach

POIPU — A 64-year-old male visitor from California apparently drowned while snorkeling in waters off Waiohai Beach Friday afternoon. 

At approximately 4:10 p.m., the man was seen floating face-down about 75 yards from the shoreline, and a female bystander brought the unresponsive man to shore, according to a news release from the county. 

Lifeguards performed CPR on the victim until medics arrived and took over. 

The man was then transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
