KEKAHA — A 23-year-old Koloa woman died in a two-car crash on Kaumualii Highway in Kekaha Saturday afternoon.
The woman was a passenger in a Honda Civic driven by a 25-year-old Kekaha man.
The Honda was eastbound on the highway near the entrance to Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor at approximately 3:20 p.m. when a westbound green sedan turned left in front of the Honda into the roadway leading to the harbor. The driver of the Honda lost control of his vehicle, crossed the centerline and crashed sideways into a Ford Ranger heading west.
The driver of the Ranger, a 55-year-old Kekaha woman, sustained minor injuries and was released at the scene. There were no passengers in the truck.
Speed is believed to be a factor in this crash, which is Kauai’s first traffic fatality for 2016.
The highway was closed for approximately 4 1/2 hours following the crash to allow police to investigate. Motorists were able to use Waimea Canyon Drive as an alternate route.
Anyone with information about the accident is asked to contact Officer Marnie Fernandez at 241-1613.
