‘They love to see pictures!”

Friday was a special day for Mary Vales.

It was the annual Seniors’ Valentine’s Day party at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall and at the height of dancing to music provided by Natural Harmony, Russell Wellington of the county’s Parks and Recreation Department announced that it was Vales’ 97th birthday.

“This is one of Na Kupuna Council’s highlights of the year,” said Melanie Okamoto of the county’s Parks and Recreation Department. “The seniors love to dance and party, and rather than a DJ, we treated them with live music by Natural Harmony who provides them with music they love to dance to.”

One of the day’s features included the maracas contest where the different senior centers got together to create the kachi-kachi style instruments using items they could find anywhere.

“They love to see their pictures,” Okamoto said. “We even created a special photo booth where they can get pictures dressed up in their Valentine’s outfits.”
