‘Global Cafe’
As part of Kauai Community College’s international education effort, a “Global Cafe” will be held on Monday, Feb. 8 from noon to 1:30 p.m. in OCET 106C/D. Kauai resident Dr. Siegfried Streufert, Professor Emeritus at Penn State College of Medicine, will present a talk titled “Growing up in Nazi Germany: Death and Survival in a Vicious Dictatorship.”
The public is encouraged to attend. Dr. Streufert was a child when the Nazis came to power, and his father, asenator in the Weimar Republic, was murdered by the regime on political pretexts. Streufert went on to a prominent career as a psychologist at several American universities. His memoir “Arch of Fire” is available on Amazon and offers poignant insight into life under Nazi rule from a child’sperspective. Contact: Kyoko Ikeda at 245-8368.
‘Best Presentation’
KCC Institutional Researcher Leighton Vila recently traveled to the regional meeting of the Association for Institutional Research where his paper on Filipinos in Hawaii was awarded Best Presentation for 2015. As a result, his paper was automatically selected for the Association’s National Forum in New Orleans in May of this year. The National Forum is the nation’s premier conference for institutional research, planning, and assessment in post-secondary education.
Olympiad
The college hosted the 8th annual Kauai Regional Science Olympiad Tournament on Jan. 18, with over 100 middle and high schools participating. The inaugural Elementary Science Olympiad for third- to sixth-graders will be held on campus on April 23. Continuing education
KCC’s Office of Continuing Education and Training offers a wide array of courses and workshops. February’s schedule includes courses in computer applications, grant management, behavioral interviewing, business writing, workforce and professional development, photography, soap making, American Sign Language, and Japanese for Busy People. The college’s band, jazz ensemble and orchestra are offered both for college credit and also as a noncredit option under OCET. OCET also offers certification programs for security guards, forklift operators, and food safety workers. Additionally, OSHA courses in electrical and chemical safety, personal protective equipment, and respiratory protection are also offered. Contact: 245- 8318.
Alumnus Success Story
Congratulations go out to former KCC student Beaux Kemp, one of the college’s first embedded peer tutors in math. Beaux went on to earn a civil engineering degree from the University of Alaska with a minor in math, and is working on his MS degree in civil engineering at the same university, while also working as a research assistant. Over the past several years he has garnered numerous awards for academic and leadership excellence, including the 2015 Coral Sales Scholarship, the 2015 Student Leadership and Achievement Award, the 2014 Bill Mendenhall Scholarship, and the 2013 Ralf Migliaccio Scholarship.
