The Music Department at Island School is taking the Island School Alakai Chorus to Oahu on February 11-13 to participate in the 2016 Na Leo Hou Hawaii All-State Choral Festival.
This event, produced by the Hawaii Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association and the Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus, was organized to give Hawaii high school singers an opportunity to sing challenging music with a top notch choral clinician.
Over 320 high school singers from Oahu, Kauai, and the Big Island will join together to rehearse for three days before presenting a concert at the Central Union Church in Honolulu. The concert will be conducted by Tesfa Wondemagegnehu, conductor of The Radio Choir from American Public Media. Wondemagegnehu is in wide demand as a guest conductor, lecturer, and soloist throughout the United States and internationally.
Philip Steinbacher, choral director at Island School, will take 24 members of the Island School Alaka’i Chorus to O‘ahu to join choruses from ‘Iolani School, Punahou School, and other Hawai’i public and private schools to prepare for the culminating concert on Saturday, February 13.
“I’ve been taking Island School students to ACDA choral festivals since I came in 2006,” said Steinbacher, “and I wouldn’t miss the chance to let my students attend. It’s amazing how they grow in a few short days, and I can’t think of a better way for students to experience the value of coming together with others to make music and lifelong memories.”
The Island School Alakai Chorus will perform “La Vergine degli Angeli” by Giuseppi Verdi at Saturday evening’s concert.
Island School students going to the Na Leo Hou festival on Oahu include: Sydney Agudong, Saige Akana, Athena Alexander, Andy Anderton, Pierce Bivens, Bianca Colagreco, Jackson Evans, Olivia Gegen, Taj Gutierrez, Aliana Ho, Kenz Hubbard, Nico Maione, Jade Murphy, Makenna Olson, Carolyn Price, Ziko Quintana, Shea Riley, Sophia Sherrer, Emily Sullivan, Allison Summerhays, Zebediah Wichert, Ariana Wilson, Lia Yamasato and Ryan Yavinsky.
