LIHUE — Speakers in global food justice, environment, human rights, GMOs and pesticide issues from Africa, Asia, Central America, Europe and Hawaii will participate at Hawaii Alliance for Progressive Action and Pesticide Action Network North America’s event, “Challenging Global Impacts of the Agrochemical Industry: 2016 Food Justice Summit.”
The summit will take place Jan. 15-20 at locations throughout the Hawaiian Islands. The meeting on Kauai is scheduled 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center.
Sabra Kauka will be the emcee of the Kauai event. She is a kumu of Hawaiian Studies and Hula Na Pua o Kamaile at Island School. In addition, she coordinates the Department of Education Hawaiian Studies Cultural Personnel Resources on Kauai. She teaches many traditional arts, including making kappa, feather lei and weaving lauhala. She is a founding member and president of Na Pali Coast Ohana, the Caretakers of Nualolo State Park on Kauai.
Speakers include:
• Mariann Bassey Orovwuje is program manager of Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria.
• Sarojeni V. Rengam is executive director of Pesticide Action Network Asia and the Pacific in Malaysia.
• Eva Schürmann is an activist with MultiWatch, a Swiss-based group that monitors multinational corporations headquartered in Switzerland.
• Adelita San Vicente Tello, is director of Semillas de Vida Fundacion (Seeds of Life Foundation) in Mexico.
• Malia Kahale‘inia Chun is from the mokupuni of Kauai and the ahupuaa of Wailuanuiahoano. She is also the program coordinator of the Na Pua No‘eau Program at Kauai Community College, University of Hawaii.
The Summit will also include a “Convergence on the Capitol” on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., to support the efforts of community groups leading the charge for rights to land, water and food with rallies and other events on the Legislature’s opening day.
The genesis for the Summit came from the experience of the Kauai delegation that traveled in April to Switzerland, home of Syngenta, according to a press release.
