Ruby Brothers Maas from Kauai, Hawaii passed away at the age of 89 on Nov. 19, 2015, with her loving family by her bedside in Lihue, HI.
She was born on Oct. 19, 1926, in American Falls, Idaho. Ruby worked for many years as a Bookkeeper for Slusser Wholesale in Idaho Falls, ID, until she moved to Kauai in 1973, where she worked as an accountant/bookkeeper for Raymond E. Hoe Realtor, Inc. and Kahili Builders for 37 years.
Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, Ben (Happy) Brothers and Emma Becker Brothers of Idaho Falls, ID, husband, Ray H Maas, of Idaho Falls, ID and her grandson, Sean K Hoe, of Kapaa, Hawaii.
She is survived by her daughter, Sherry Maas Hoe (and beloved son-in-law Raymond) of Lihue; sister, Violet J. Wesner of Hughson, Calif., brother, Ben E. Brothers, (Nora Patricio) of Hanapepe; grandchildren, Schylar PM Hoe Fredrick (Peter) of Tigard, Oregon, and Chara T. Hoe (Nadine Naumu) of Lawai.
A memorial of her life will be held at a later date. The family wishes to send a special thank you to Dr. Robert Weiner and the Kauai Hospice Family.
Susan Victoria Dunbar
Susan Victoria Dunbar “Susie” was born on Sept 18, 1956, and passed away on Nov. 23, 2015. She was the daughter of Captain John P. Dunbar (USN RET) and Vilma E. Dunbar (both deceased).
Susan was preceded in death by her sisters, Lynn and Marie. She is survived by brothers, John and Glen from Maui; sister, Elaine and husband Leland from Kauai, Hawaii; former companion Trula Kazaitis, Dr. and Mrs. John McLeay of Nebraska and numerous family members in Nebraska and Massachusetts.
Susie was a photographer, poet and occasionally sang at Canlis Restaurant in Waikiki. As a dedicated volunteer at Queens Hospital for nearly four years she brought flowers to recovering patients and on her own, visited sick or terminally ill patients. Susie was loved by many volunteers and patients at the Queens Hospital, as well, by many long-time friends. Nothing put a huge smile on her face more than encountering a little baby or children. Susie adored children. Her extraordinary compassion for the poor and homeless led to distributing much of her small monthly income to people in need.
“Dearest Susan, may the angels greet you, come to meet you, and escort you into Paradise.”
Mass will be celebrated at St. Augustine by the Sea Catholic Church, 130 Ohua Avenue, Waikiki at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2015. Friends may visit with the family following Mass. Flowers are welcome or in lieu of flowers, donations can made to St. Augustine Church for their mission to feed people in need.

Adriano ‘Andring’ Pascual
Adriano “Andring” Pascual of Lihue, Hawaii, passed away at Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, Philippines on Nov. 15, 2015, at the age of 74. Born on March 1, 1941, in Barit, Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, he was a service truck mechanic with Kekaha Sugar Plantation.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Lydia J. Pascual; parents, David and Hilaria Pascual; and brother Wilfred Pascual Sr.
Andring is survived by his son, Andrew (Beverly Canali) Pascual of Lihue, Hawaii; daughter, Apryle (Kenneth) Rosa of Lihue; hanai-daughters, Mary Loverne (Robert) Cabreros of Honolulu, and Janet Marquez of the Philippines; two grandchildren, Khelcie Rosa and Aryanna Pascual; brother Crisente Pascual of Eleele; and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family Thursday, Dec. 17, 2015, at St. Theresa Church in Kekaha. Visitation will begin at 8:30 a.m. with Mass at 10. Burial will follow at the Lihue Public Cemetery.
The family suggests casual attire and flowers are welcomed.

Mary Kaliko Thronas
Mary Kaliko Thronas, known as “Aunty Mary” was born on Sept. 13, 1931, in Honolulu, Hawaii. She passed away peacefully at home on Dec. 5, 2015 at the age of 84.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Samuel K. Thronas Sr.; mother, Margaret Kuewa Kilia Risner; father, Clifford Risner and sister, Lorraine Silvera.
Mary became chief flight attendant for Aloha Airlines and training instructor. She was the last surviving of the original four flight attendants for Aloha Airlines.
Mary played an integral part in the rise of the Democratic Party as a convention delegate since 1961. On Nov. 1, 1970, she was appointed as the Govenor’s Liason to the County of Kauai by the late Governor George Ariyoshi and Governer John Waihee. She also served as Chairwoman for the Kauai County Council.
Mary was involved with many organizations and received many community awards. Most recently she was honored by the Zonta Club of Kauai as an outstanding leader and volunteer for 41 years and as a Living Treasure in 2014 by the Kauai Museum.
Mary served on the Board of Directors as an officer, as well as a member of the Stanford Hospital Foundation, the Wilcox Foundation, Kauai Economic Opportunity, Incorporated, St. Catherine’s Church Council Building Fund, The Zonta Club of Kauai Foundation and Tip Top Motel & Cafe among others.
She is survived by her children, George (Darlene) Thronas, Samuel Jr. (Iris) Thronas, Earl Thronas and Charmane (Audie); sisters, Bridget (Paul) Cafferty, Catherine Dyer Bassle (George); brother, Thomas (Chris) Risner and brother, and sister-in-law, Henry (Renee) Thronas and many grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Memorial Services will be held on Dec. 26, 2015, at St. Catherine’s Church at 5021 Kawaihau Road, Kapaa. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. with memorial Mass to follow at 11. Burial will be private. Arrangements will be handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Lt. Col. Gordon Dean DeRoos and Neva Mae DeRoos
Lt. Col. Gordon Dean DeRoos and Neva Mae DeRoos passed away peacefully with their family present in their home in Princeville, Hawaii.
Gordon was born Jan. 20, 1933, in O’Brien County, Iowa to Donald and Hannah DeRoos. Gordon died at home on Dec. 6, 2015. Neva was born on April 20, 1933, in Baker Township, Iowa to Roy and Louise Benz. Neva died at home on Dec. 7, 2015.
Gordon retired as a Lieutenant Colonel with the United States Army after 20 years of service. Following his retirement, he created and taught an internet based trading commodity course until his death. Neva was a homemaker, raising four children, and worked as a registered nurse. Following her retirement, she volunteered with Kauai Hospice. Gordon and Neva were childhood sweethearts, married March 28, 1953, and died within hours of each other.
They were preceded in death by their granddaughter, Kelley Auyong in 2007 and son, Reginald DeRoos on July 3, 2015.
They are survived by three children, Deborah DeRoos of Kailua-Kona, Ricky DeRoos of Santa Barbara, Calif., Steven (Marilou) DeRoos of Princeville; daughter-in-law, Rebecca DeRoos; grandchildren, Angela DeRoos and Mikhaila DeRoos; great-grandchildren, Aaron Modeer and Kyle Modeer; sister, Beulah Ahrenstorff of Iowa; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Private services will be held. Donations may be made to Kauai Hospice. Family graciously declines flowers.
Kauai Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home assisted the DeRoos family with arrangements.
Gladys Toshiko Nagata
Gladys Toshiko Nagata of Kalaheo passed away at the age of 84, on Dec. 4, 2015. She retired as a dental assistant for Dr. C. Taba’s and Dr. P. Hamamoto’s Dentistry.
She is survived by her husband, Larry Isamu Nagata of Kalaheo; son, Nathan Nagata of Hanapepe; daughter, Natalie (Gary) Umipeg of Fairfield, Calif.; and five grandchildren, Brandon Umipeg, Kiani Nagata, Andrew Umipeg, Sienna Nagata and Trinity Nagata.
Private services will be held at a later date and the family requests no koden.
Arrangements were handled by Garden Island Mortuary, Ltd.
Merle Mitsuko Endo
Merle Mitsuko Endo of Hilo, Hawaii, passed away on Dec. 5, 2015, at the age of 67, in Honolulu, Oahu.
Born to Joseph and Michiko Esaki on Kauai, she is survived by her husband, Barney Endo; sons, Cory Endo and Dion Tyler (Kyoko) Endo; daughter, Karin Warganich; grandson, Carter Warganich; brothers, Paul (Charlene) Esaki, Dennis (Hisako) Esaki, Clement (Amy) Esaki and Godwin (Janet) Esaki; and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial services will be held at the Garden Island Mortuary Chapel in Lawai on Monday, Dec. 21, 2015. Visitation will begin at 4:30 p.m. with services at 5:30.
Ashes will be placed to rest at a later date.

John Scott Sylvester
John Scott Sylvester passed away on Nov. 7, 2015. John resided in the town of Kapaa. John was born in Ohio on April 10, 1948.
John was an artist at heart working with natural stone and wood, were his life accomplishments.
John was preceded by his father, John Sylvester. He was survived by his mother, Elizabeth; brother, Tom; sister, Sandy; son, John, Scott, Myles; daughter, Chelsea, Monique; two granddaughters and two grandsons.
