LIHUE — Betty Baldwin will be 91 years old in December.
“She found a new hobby at 85 years old,” her daughter Arlene Baldwin said Friday morning at the Kauai Marriott Resort and Beach Club craft fair. “She knew how to crochet with yarn all this time. At 85, she learned how to work with wire and created these hand-crocheted jewelry using pearls and semi-precious stones. Now, we do these jewelry pieces together.”
The Baldwins were among 30 vendors who occupied more than 40 tables at the craft fair with proceeds benefiting Kauai’s nonprofit organizations.
“It’s all staying on the island,” said Sherri Sanchez Holcomb, fair coordinator. “We try to coordinate this event every year to coincide with the hotel’s highest occupancy.”
A representative from the Salty Wahine said shoppers included visitors and locals.
“I do the majority of my shopping at this event,” Holcomb said. “It’s not that I organize it, but it’s because these vendors offer unique items which make great gifts — especially if you’re shipping to the Mainland. I even shop for myself because I love that local entrepreneurs can make money.”
