KEALIA — The Kauai High School boys placed its top five runners in the top 12, and the Kapaa High School girls placed its top five runners in the top 10 to earn wins in the Kauai Interscholastic Federation cross country race hosted by Kapaa High School Saturday at the Kauai Ranch.
Kauai’s Dutch Fairbanks, despite battling a congestive cold bug, topped the boys field, crossing the 3-mile course on a run at 18 minutes, 30.07 seconds.
“It was tiring, today,” Fairbanks said. “I got this cold two days ago, and that had me congested. But it was nice not having Braden (Andrews, Kapaa) breathing down my neck. Instead, Tytan was right behind me so I had to keep going. The good thing is that he’s on my team. Overall, this felt like a shorter course than last year when I beat Kapaa’s Micah Nobriga-Ferris in the rain.”
On the girls’ field, Carolyn Price of Island School continued to set the pace, crossing the line first on a 22:19.24 run.
“This was a very pretty course,” Price said. “I could see the girls powering through the uphill, but today is great weather for running here. I’m ready for the KIF Championships.”
Cross country takes a breather Saturday before Island School hosts the KIF championships on Oct. 17 starting at 8 a.m.
