WAILUA — Friends of Kamalani and Lydgate Park are planning a cleanup day of Morgan’s Ponds this weekend.
“We invite people to help clean up this on Saturday from 8:30 a.m.,” John Lydgate said. “The more hands we get, the faster the work gets done. We should be done by 10:30 a.m.”
Keiki who flocked to the water to escape the humidity and heat on the Labor’s Day holiday could not help but stop by, eventually tossing several armloads of the vegetative material liberally spiced with plastic bits and pieces onto the shore, adding to the accumulated mess.
“This came with the high surf we had when Ignacio passed,” Lydgate said. “We had several days of tradewinds, and with all the rain washing things down the Wailua River, the surf and wind pushed this all in.”
Lydgate said the water had turned “nasty.”
“It’s full of sludge, again,” he said. “This time, it’s not settled on the bottom. But it’s murky, and at least it’s not contaminated.”
