Sadayoshi ‘Smally’ Kunioka
Sadayoshi “Smally” Kunioka, age 96, passed away peacefully in the company of his loving wife at the Kauai Care Center in Waimea, Kauai on Tuesday, July 14, 2015. He was born on December 10, 1918, in Makaweli Camp 1, now Kaumakani, where he lived for 94 years. He was the third oldest of five siblings.
Starting at age 15, he worked at Olokele Sugar Co., where he became a respected diesel engine mechanic.
In 1958, when he was 39, he married Hiroko Kawano, with whom he had three children.
He retired from his position at Olokele Sugar Co. after 50+ years of service.
He enjoyed gardening, watching sports on television, any kind of gambling, eating ice cream, going on walks, and talking story at McDonald’s.
Sadayoshi was hardworking, generous, clever, creative, funny, and loved animals.
He is survived by his wife, Hiroko, his sisters, Shizumi and Miyono, his children, Phyllis (Tony), Laura (Dan), and Steven (Lisa), and his granddaughter, Sarah.
His family misses him greatly, and cherishes his memory and legacy.
Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, July 22, 2015, at Waimea Honpa Hongwanji Church, 4675 Menehune Road, Waimea.
The family will greet friends beginning at 11 a.m., and the service will commence at noon. Aloha attire. Luncheon to follow. No flowers.
