A brief power outage affected about 22,000 Kauai Island Utility Cooperative customers across the island Monday morning.
The blackout is the island’s third widespread outage of the year.
According to KIUC spokesman Jim Kelly, power went offline at 10:30 a.m. when KIUC’s main generator at Kapaia tripped, causing blackouts across the island. Power was restored to some areas by 10:47 a.m. and all areas by 10:55 a.m.
Not all areas of the island were affected; parts of Lihue, Kapaa, Kekaha, Poipu, Haena and Wainiha did not lose power. The Pacific Missle Range Facility was also not affected.
The cause of the outage has not yet been determined.
In the afternoon, KIUC seemed to acknowledge the inconvenience and tweeted a message to its followers: “Because timing is everything, we’ll be putting off our member satisfaction telephone survey for a few days… Ok go ahead and chuckle now.”
