Man gets 10 years in prison

LIHUE — A 39-year-old man was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Tuesday.

Aaron K. Kahalewai, originally of Honolulu, was sentenced in three cases arising from crimes committed between April 26 and July 4 of 2014.

In one case, Kahalewai broke into two vehicles outside residences on Kauai and was later found in possession of drugs and stolen property. In another, he was apprehended while driving without a license and had drugs firearm ammunition inside his vehicle. In the third case, Kahalewai was driving without a license and almost ran over a police officer’s foot while fleeing.

Kahalewai’s criminal history led to him being prosecuted as a career criminal.

“This defendant has proven repeatedly that he cannot abide by the standards set for appropriate behavior in our community,” said Prosecuting Attorney Justin F. Kollar. “Unfortunately the only remedy left to protect the community from this individual is a substantial amount of time in prison.”
