LIHUE — A 34-year-old man was arrested for manslaughter and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant in connection to the death of a Lawai man early Monday.

Evan Craft was the driver of the SUV that struck 37-year-old Michael Helppie of Lawai about 1:45 a.m. near the Kalapaki seawall along Nawiliwili Park, according to county spokeswoman Sarah Blane. Helppie was pronounced dead at the scene.

Craft has been released and an investigation continues, Blane said.
