KAPAA — This year’s Mayor-a-thon pays tribute to dads with the theme “Hats Off to Dads!” Fittingly, the first 600 people to register online for the event at www.getfitkauai.com will receive a hat.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to sign up early to walk, run or bike one, two, four, six or eight miles in the seventh annual Mayor-a-thon. The event will be held on June 20 at the Kapaa Beach Park with check-in set for 6:30 a.m.
The deadline to register for this free event is midnight on June 18.
Online registrants will have a chance to win prizes, including a two-night stay at the Kauai Marriott Resort and Beach Club and one of four bicycles. Winners must be present to win.
There will also be games and live music, and a healthy continental breakfast will be served. In addition, police officers will be distributing free reusable shopping bags and blinking safety lights from Walk Wise Hawaii.
As the Mayor-a-thon is a Zero Waste event, participants should bring their own water bottles or pick up a free bottle provided by GEICO at the event.
Participants can also contribute toward a Healthy Food Drive with proceeds going to the Kauai Independent Food Bank and The Hawaii Food Bank – Kauai Branch. Suggested donations include: canned or dried fruits; 100 percent fruit or fruit/vegetable juice; canned vegetables; canned soups; 100 percent vegetable juice; brown or hapa rice; whole-grain cereals; dried beans or lentils; canned beans; canned tuna; canned meat; and shelf-stable milk.
