PUHI — Liz Hahn of Kauai Bettas had a hard time concentrating on the steady stream of customers at her booth at the Kauai Community Market Saturday.
“They’re judging as we speak,” Hahn said. “We’ve got fish at the California Betta Show and they’re being judged, now.”
Hahn submitted 27 fish for consideration and finished with 16 being awarded, including seven first-place awards and a show special award for Doubletail Female.
She also pocketed five second-place awards and a third-place award from the field of 254 fish.
“People up there are going crazy,” Hahn said. “There are a couple of people who are texting me photos of the fish they want to buy.”
Hahn’s first place awards came in the Light Solid Single Tail Male in the self-bred category. She also pocketed gold for the Light Solid Single Tail Female, the Metallic Solid Single Tail Female in dark and light judging, the Multicolor Single Tail Female, the Marble/Grizzle Single Tail Male, the Marble/Grizzle Single Tail Female, and the Female Doubletails of all colors and types in the doubletails category.
Her second place finishes came in the Bicolor Single Tail Male in the self-bred category. It was joined by the Butterfly Single Tail Male, the Marble/Grizzle Single Tail Male and the Marble/Grizzle Single Tail Female, that category fish also copping the sole third place award.
Hahn shows her fish at the weekly Kauai Community Market, a partnership with the Kauai Farm Bureau and the Kauai Community College, on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
