LIHUE — Cyrus Tamashiro, the past Hawaii United Okinawa Association president and host for the Okinawa Festival, said the theme of this year’s event is “Sumiti,” or to make an imprint.
“An imprint is a time when we see what our ancestors did,” Tamashiro said. “And an imprint is what we do for our future.”
The Okinawa Festival, hosted by the Hui Alu, or Kauai’s Okinawa club, opened two days of free Okinawa entertainment, including sanshin performances and the shishimai, or lion’s dance, food, crafts, and cultural displays at the Kauai Veterans Center in Lihue.
“We had the huli huli pig,” said Bev Pang, retired as the vice principal at the Kapaa Middle School. “We’re coming back for the shoyu pork Saturday.”
On the menu in addition to the specials, andagi, champuru, or stir fried vegetables, Okinawa soba, yaki soba, shoyu chicken, and the pig’s feet soup beckoned attendees.
The Okinawa Festival returns in two years.
