Library system offers lots on health

The Hawaii State Public Library System provides a wealth of materials to answer health and wellness questions. In addition to print books, HSPLS offers online databases to search for answers about specific diseases, symptoms and treatment. Drug information is accessible, as well as information about nutrition and exercise. Some of our available titles include Consumer Health Complete, Health and Medicine and Health Source, Consumer Edition.

Two alternative health databases, Alternative Health Watch and Health and Wellness Resource Center with Alternative Health Module contain journal articles, some full-text, and information from other sources. The Health and Wellness Resource Center provides access to health videos.

In addition, HSPLS subscribes to MedicLatina, a unique collection of medical research and investigatory journals from renowned Latin American and Spanish publishers. We also offer the Ebsco Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection.

All material is available for free with a valid HSPLS library card.

To find print books on health and wellness, search the library catalog available on our home page:

Electronic books and audiobooks can be searched from two different sites: 1) The Gale Virtual Library Reference Library which includes titles such as Alzheimer’s Disease Sourcebook (2011), The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Boosting Your Immunity (2013), and Consumer Healthcare (2014); and 2) our Overdrive website:

For magazine lovers, HSPLS offers Zinio eMagazines. Issues of the magazines can be downloaded and kept without having to be returned. Magazines related to health include: Fitness, Men’s Health, Women’s Health, Natural Health, Prevention, Shape and Yoga Journal.

HSPLS provides online classes from the database Gale Courses on a variety of different topics including health:
