Hikers airlifted from Kalalau

HANAKAPIAI – The Kauai Fire Department airlifted 32 stranded hikers from the Kalalau Valley Wednesday evening after rising waters made the Hanakapiai Stream impassable.

A hiker who crossed the stream and made it back to the trailhead about 5 p.m. notified rescuers of the others who were stranded.

Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 airlifted all hikers back to the Kee Beach landing zone by nightfall.

No injuries were reported.

Heavy rains blanketed the island Wednesday.
