PUHI — Michael Gmelin’s life in Panama inspired her to move to Kauai.
“I lived there for two years in the 1960s when my father was in the military,” said Gmelin, a librarian at the Kauai Community College Learning Resource Center. “There are three of us at the college, Linde Kiel, a tutor, and Keith Olsen, a student and tutor, who lived in Panama.”
Pooling their resources, Gmelin said they’ve put together a display of artifacts, crafts, photos, maps, and books about Panama, the Panama Canal, the country and its different peoples.
“The Embera people were used by the United States to help teach jungle survival to soldiers heading to Vietnam,” Gmelin said.
People can stop by the LRC during its operating hours of 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays when school is in session to view the free exhibit. Friday hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the LRC is closed during the weekend.
