For the second year, Kauai Community College has been awarded a grant from the Honda International Opportunities Fund for its current International Awareness Month.
Events include a talk story session with Lucie Novakova, a student from the Czech Republic, on Wednesday, from noon to 1:15 p.m. in LRC room 124B. On Thursday, Charles Sasaki will make a presentation on the Fulbright Scholar program from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in OCET room 105. And on Feb. 25, the college will have its annual International Day from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Campus Center. The annual American Culinary Federation Breakfast fundraiser will be next Sunday, Feb. 15, from 7 to 11 a.m. The fundraiser will help KCC culinary students with scholarships, equipment and supplies.
The breakfast will showcase food prepared by KCC students and island chefs to the accompaniment of island entertainment. In conjunction with the breakfast is the annual library book sale. For more information, contact Martina Hildorfer, Food Services assistant professor, 245-8301.
The 7th annual Kauai Regional Science Olympiad Tournament was held at the college on Jan. 19. Middle and high school students from seven schools participated in 26 science and engineering events. As a result of their scores in the Olympiad, Island School and St. Theresa will be representing Kauai middle schools at the State Tournament on March 14,and Island School and Waimea will be the high school representatives.
Congratulations to KCC Mathematics Instructor Ryan Girard, who is the Kauai Regional tournament director of the Olympiad, and also to KCC chemistry instructor Michael Hannawald, who is the KCC Liaison to the Olympiad.
“Balance of Nature,” a public lecture series sponsored by the National Tropical Botanical Garden and Kauai Community College, will next present “Healing with Hawaiian Plants,” a lecture by Sean Chun, practitioner of Hawaiian healing arts, on Feb. 17 at 5:30 p.m. Using commonly grown Hawaiian plants and sharing his knowledge of traditional healing techniques and horticulture, Chun will explore the links between plants, culture and health from a Hawaiian perspective. Mathematics instructor Ryan Girard has 11 years of community college teaching experience and specializes in distance education in mathematics. Girard earned a master’s degree in applied mathematics from the University of Colorado as well as a bachelor’s in mathematics and another in meteorology from the University of Massachusetts. He was a 2013-14 Wo Learning Champion, and is in the President’s Emerging Leaders Program.
