LIHUE — Kauai Police Department continues to investigate two major traffic crashes that occurred last week. Investigators are urging anyone who may have witnessed either incident to contact police.
The first crash occurred around 6:30 a.m. Jan. 29 at the intersection of Ahukini Road and Kuhio Highway in Lihue. This is the area fronting Kentucky Fried Chicken.
According to police, a Nissan pickup was making a left turn from Kuhio Highway onto Ahukini when it was struck by a moped traveling north on the highway.
The 23-year-old male operator of the moped and his female passenger, 20, were treated for their injuries at Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
The female passenger has been released and the driver remains in stable condition. The 58-year-male driver of the pickup did not report any injuries.
The following day, a two-car crash near Knudsen Gap in Kipu resulted in critical injuries to a 28-year-old female.
A eastbound Ford Ranger truck crossed the center line and broadsided the passenger-side of an oncoming Chevy Spark about 8 a.m.
The female passenger of the Chevy was taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital and then medivaced to Queen’s Hospital on Oahu where she remains in stable condition.
The 44-year-old male driver of the Ford Ranger was transported to Wilcox in stable condition and has since been released. The male operator of the Chevy sedan did not report injuries.
