KAPAA — Kapaa High School senior Bryson Baligad broke a Kauai Interscholastic Federation swim record at the opening qualifying swim last week.
On Saturday, Baligad continued his dominance in the pool by shattering another KIF record while garnering a state auto qualifying swim and adding four consideration swims in five events at the Kapaa pool.
Baligad followed on the heels of Kauai senior Yasmine Ware, who pocketed an auto swim in the girls 100 yard butterfly event, touching the wall at 59.15 seconds, faster than the KIF championship record set in 2010 by Kapaa’s Anya Littlefield.
The swim was better than the KIF Championship record, but fell short of the 58.15 record set in 2012 by Ware. The KIF Championship record can only be broken during a championship meet.
Baligad followed this performance by touching the wall at 55.55 to break the 55.73 record set in 2006 by Kauai swimmer Keenan Anaya. The swim earned Baligad a state auto time with Zachary Safford, a Kauai freshman, getting second place at 59.48, a consideration swim.
These were just two of the three auto swims of the day, the third belonging to Ware to capture a berth in the girls 100 yard backstroke with her first finish swim of 1:01.38. It was more than 9 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Kaira Kaaihue, a Red Raider freshman who touched at 1:10.06.
Kaaihue earned a consideration swim as part of the girls 200 yard medley relay, chopping more than 5 seconds over the team’s seeded swim.
The KIF qualifying swims continue at 1 p.m. Saturday the Kauai High School pool.
