Free onions start today

WAIMEA — Basilio “Bunga” Fuertes, an instructor with Waimea High School, is offering free bulb onions starting at 3 today at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihue.

“These are not for saimin,” said Fuertes, who has given away onions before. “These are for planting and will result in bulb onions.”

Fuertes said he has about a hundred batches of the starts, each containing about 50 starts, that will be given out on a first come, first serve basis.

Previously, Fuertes distributed the starts on an annual basis in Waimea and Eleele.

“This time, I though it would be nice to give people in other parts of the island to try their hand at growing these onions,” Fuertes said.

Growing instructions for the onions will also be available.
