Drowning victim identified

The Kauai Police Department has released the name of the Utah man who drowned in waters off Anini Beach on Sunday afternoon.

Junies Jenkins, 69, of St. George, Utah, drowned after being swept out by a rip current while walking in shallow water near the Anini channel at around 3 p.m. Bystanders attempted to rescue Jenkins using paddleboards and a buoy.

Water safety officers from Kauai Fire Department arrived to the scene on a jet ski to find Jenkins unresponsive. They initiated CPR on shore before medics transported him to Wilcox Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
