North Shore beaches closed due to high surf

All North Shore beaches, from the Hanalei Pavilion to Kee Beach, were closed to swimming Wednesday due to high surf and dangerous ocean conditions. Ocean Safety officials reported wave heights of up to 25 feet in those areas.

Lifeguards remained at the beach towers throughout the day to notify beachgoers of the closure.

All beaches will reopen as officials deem them safe for swimming.

The National Weather Service has posted a High Surf Warning along all north and west facing shores of Kauai and Niihau until 6 p.m. Wednesday. The warning may be extended or modified as conditions develop. Beachgoers are urged to stay out of the water and away from shorelines in these areas while the warning remains in effect.
