Accident closes highway

LIHUE — A Kapaa couple was injured in a two-car accident Wednesday night, which closed Kaumualii Highway in both directions for over an hour.

According to the Kauai Police Department, the accident occurred around 9 p.m. A gray Nissan sedan operated by a 65-year-old man from Maryland was traveling west on Kaumualii Highway when the vehicle crossed the centerline and collided head-on with an oncoming white Nissan sedan about one-quarter mile east of Halfway Bridge.

The white sedan was operated by a 21-year-old male, with a 21-year-old female passenger, both from Kapaa. The female passenger in the white sedan and the male driver of the gray sedan were injured and were transported via ambulance to Wilcox Memorial Hospital.

Both lanes of the highway were closed about 9:20 p.m. Emergency personnel cleared the roadway of debris and both vehicles involved in the collision were towed from the scene. The highway was reopened about 10:10 p.m.

An investigation continues.
