LIHUE — A Kauai police officer was honored for locating a suspect in a sexual assault case.
Officer Dustin Broad was presented with Employee of the Month honors at the Kauai Police Commission meeting.
On Aug. 25, Broad responded to a report of a sexual assault on a young female.
The victim was only able to provide a vague physical description of the suspect and added that he lived in the area. With the proximity of the victim to the suspect, Broad feared the offender might return and assault the female again, so he canvassed the area.
KPD credits Broad’s diligence with finding the suspect, which resulted in an arrest.
“Due to Officer Broad’s relentless pursuit of justice, a dangerous sexual predator was removed from the community and thereby keeping others safe who may have fallen prey to this individual,” KPD said.
Police Commission Chair Charles Iona said he knew and worked with Broad’s grandfather, who was also a Kauai police officer.
“Your grandfather was a legend at KPD and you are following in those footsteps,” Iona said. “Continue what you are doing because what you’re doing now is all anyone could ask for. You are setting a high standard.”
