NUKOLII — The 36th annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk on Kauai in May raised about $235,000, surpassing its goal of $202,000.
Representatives from 54 nonprofits met Friday at the Aqua Kauai Beach Resort to share in the proceeds from “Charity in Motion.”
During a time when budgets are being cut, these funds help the groups continue their work for the community, said Denise Wardlow, general manager of the Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas and the president of the Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association, Kauai Chapter.
A new promotion this year included the Mayor’s Challenge. Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. finished in a tie for second place with a 17 percent increase over the 2013 collection. Among the other innovations adding to the coffers was the inclusion of a commemorative shirt and trucker hat designed by Deep Kauai of Kapaa.
Top individual fundraisers for Kauai included Lilian Watari of the Hanalei Bay Resort, David Mona of the Parrish Collection and Marie Tiraschi of the Outrigger Kiahuna.
More than 100 businesses helped with fundraising efforts.
The 37th annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk on Kauai is scheduled May 16.
