PUHI — For two miles in Saturday’s cross country race at Kauai Community College, Kapaa High’s Micah Nobriga-Ferris ran well off the pace.
“I was somewhere in the back,” Nobriga-Ferris said. “As I said last week, ‘I leave myself in God’s hands.’”
In the third mile, though, he took charge. Nobriga-Ferris ran to the front and stretched his lead to the finish line, stopping the clock at 17:23, more than 20 seconds ahead of Island School’s Michael Miller in 17:47 and Josh Miller 18:32. Kapaa’s Braden Andrews was fourth in 18:39.
“The conditions were about the same as last week in Waimea — hot!” Nobriga-Ferris said. “I think I got a 17:23 which is less than the 16s I got in Waimea. But I’m going to love the Kapaa ranch, next week.”
Island School’s boys team, though, won with 28 points followed by Kapaa at 35 points. Kauai was third at 69 points, followed by Waimea with 87 points.
For the girls, Kapaa finished with 30 points, edging Island School with 32 points. Kauai girls tallied 77 points followed by Waimea with 106 points.
Carolyn Price of Island School was the individual winner. She took the lead early and never lost it, covering the three-mile course in 21 minutes, 35 seconds.
Kapaa’s Kelsea Armstrong was second in 22:02. Island School’s Gianna D’Annibale was third in 22:43. Kapaa’s Tigerlilly Zietz was fourth in 23:19 run.
Kauai’s top runner, Stacie Schnackenberg, was eighth in 23:53. Kristin Chun was 10th in 24:05.
Waimea was led by Kari Correa, who finished 20th in 25:24, and Akime Dizol (25:51) in 22nd place.
For the boys, Island School’s Kyle Riddle (19:36) and Tai Mitchell (19:47) were fifth and sixth, while teammate Micah Asuncion was 12th at 20:34
Kapaa’s Marcus Bloss (19:58) was seventh, Robert “Wyatt” Harrison was eighth (20:06) and Mason Schwarze (20:48) was 15th.
Kauai’s top runner, Reyson Agcaoili (20:20) stopped the clock in ninth overall followed by Micah Chun (20:40) and Shane Ogata (20:47) in 13th and 14th, respectively.
Waimea’s top runners, Jace Mararagan (20:31) and Devon Harsell (20:34) were 10th and 11th.
Kauai High School was without its top runners, some who were at the Iolani meet on Oahu, and some out with illnesses.
“We’ll just have to finish strong in the remainder of the races,” said Chelsea Smith-Wishard, Kauai coach.
Kapaa hosts the next KIF cross country race at the Kauai Ranch in Kealia starting at 8 a.m. Saturday.
