LIHUE – To facilitate planned paving and repair work, the Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation will close the trailer parking area and boat launch ramp at Port Allen Small Boat Harbor from 5 a.m. Tuesday to 10 a.m. Friday.
The paving is part of work nearing completion on a new floating loading dock and vessel sewage pumpout project. Contractor American Marine Corporation will pave utility trenches around the new improvements. The contractor will also be installing a new aluminum floating loading dock.
The project will install a new sewage pumpout system and a 60-foot long by 10-foot wide aluminum floating dock. The asphalt repair work is necessary to patch up the trench work related to these improvements and also repair deteriorated asphalt in the project area.
During the closure, no access will be allowed into the boat trailer parking area, loading docks, and the boat ramp. Additionally, the comfort station will be closed during the same time.
However, portable toilets will be provided, and individuals with a boat at a slip will be allowed to access their vessel and depart and return without restriction.
Other improvements also nearing completion at Port Allen is a new $440,000 comfort station built by contractor Kauai Builders, Ltd. that replaces a deteriorated restroom.
The $791,770 project is scheduled to be completed in October. When completed, the project will provide Kauai with a second vessel sewage pumpout facility (the other is at the Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor). The pumpout will allow vessel owners to properly dispose of their wastewater instead of dumping it in the ocean.
The project is partially subsidized by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Sport Fish Restoration Clean Vessel Act funding.
