Isaac “Sabu” Carvalho was named King of the Track and Lacin Montemayor was crowned the first Prince of the Track on Sunday following two days of drag races at the Kauai Raceway Park in Mana.
Carvalho, piloting a 1995 Chevy Camaro, roared down the quarter mile on a 12.398 second Elapsed Time to capture top honors in the Muscle V8 class during the opening day.
The win advanced Carvalho into the King of the Track eliminations on Sunday, where winners in all classes of the Saturday races were run off during the Test N Tune session.
Tracie Sakamoto of the Garden Isle Racing Association, host of the drag races at the Kauai Raceway Park, said the eliminations take place following each run with the last two remaining cars entering the final round for the “Wally” trophy, the same trophy awarded to winners in professional events.
Similarly, Montemayor captured top honors in the Junior Dragster class on Saturday, running an eighth of a mile on an 8.381 ET over his 8.35 dial-in time, the dragster reaching 91.07 mph on Montemayor’s .031 reaction time.
Sunday Montemayor edged out Ryancie Sakamoto, taking the Sunday race on an 8.960 ET over her 8.90 dial-in on an .085 reaction time and reaching 72.12 mph.
The win saw the “Wally” settle in Montemayor’s camp.
The next GIRA drag race is scheduled Oct. 5 and will be a day race due to the Shearwater fledging season starting Sept. 15.
Gates open from 8 a.m. with time trials starting at 10 a.m. and bracket racing starting at 2 p.m.
