Pedro Viernes
Pedro B. Viernes of Kapaa passed away Aug. 2, 2014 at home at age 82. Born September 21, 1931 in the Big Island, he retired as a groundskee-per at Plantation Hale.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Maxima Viernes, and son Ramon Viernes.
He is survived by his sons, Jesus (Tarcila) Viernes, Benigno (Leonora) Viernes, Sr., and Danny Viernes; daughters, Pacita (Armenio) Viernes Miguel, and Erlinda (Eduardo) Viernes Lactaotao, and daughter-in-law Zenaida Viernes; Also surviving are seventeen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Friends may visit with the family on Aug. 16, 2014 at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church at 8:30 a.m. Celebration of Mass at 10 a.m., followed by burial at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Kelia. Casual attire.

Presentacion Tacata
Presentacion Tacata of Hanamaulu passed away at home on August 4, 2014, at the age of 76. She was born in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte, Philippines and retired as a kitchen helper with Hanamaulu Café.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Prudencio Menor Tacata Sr.
She is survived by six children, Imelda Tacata, Elsa (Edison) Lucas, Phoebe (Victor) Devera, Mary Jane (Ronald) Olea, James (Hilda) Tacata, Prudencio (Jackie) Tacata Jr.; 11 grandchildren, Tommy (Elyse) Navalta, John Tacata, Princess Tacata, Patrick Tacata, Alyssa Olea, Ron Olea, Sarit Tacata, Krystelle Tacata, Peyton Tacata, Joshua Devera, Jocelynne Devera; 2 great-grandchildren, Canaan Navalta, Noah Navalta; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, August 15, 2014, at Immaculate Conception Church with viewing from 8:00 a.m. and Mass celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Lihue Cemetery.
Kauai Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home assisted the Tacata family with arrangements.
Miriam Rita
Miriam Gomes Rita died at home at the age of 86 on August 7, 2014 following a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. She was born in New Mill, Kauai, on December 4, 1927 to Manuel and Bina Gomes.
Preceded in death by her husband Frank Rita, she is survived by her children, Linda (Wayne) Pieratt, Sue Neuvel, and David F. Rita Sr., all of Kalaheo; grandchildren, Wendy Pieratt Castillo, Kristy Pieratt Love, Melissa Neuvel, Kimberly Neuvel (Travis) Johnson, David F. Rita Jr, all of Kalaheo, and Michael (Lauren) Neuvel of Edgewater, Maryland; great-grandchildren, Joshua and Aaron Castillo, Kainoa and Maile Love, and Kaleb and Kyle Neuvel- Johnson; sisters, Flora Duarte of Kalaheo, and Alice Palmeira of Wailua Homesteads, and Helen Rauch of Newark, California; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at Holy Cross Church in Kalaheo on August 18, 2014, with visitation from 9am to 10am, followed by Mass at 10am, and burial at Kauai Veterans’ Cemetery in Hanapepe.
Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary.
Sister Florence Remata
Sister Florence Remata passed away on Sunday, August 3, 2014 at Queen’s Hospital on Oahu.
Born Florence Veneranda Remata on November 24, 1938 in Waimea, Kauai. Sister Florence joined the Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Community in 1957 in Syracuse, New York.
She was recently assigned Regional Minister for Hawaii, California, Texas and New Mexico.
Preceded in death by her parents Crisanto and Vicenta Omakanim Remata.
She is survived by 8 brothers, David (Mercy) Remata, Edward (Berna) Remata, Alfredo (Flora) Remata all from Kauai, Richard Remata, Stanley (Norma) Remata from Oahu, Lawrence Remata (Donna-deceased), Wilfred Remata, and Patrick Remata from California and 3 sisters, Mildred (Bernardo) Olores, Elizabeth (Elpidio) Aquino and Vivian (Alvis) Nonaka all from Kauai. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at the St. Theresa Church in Kekaha. Visitation will be from 9:00 – 10:00 am. Mass will be at 10:00 am, and again on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at Immaculate Conception Church in Lihue at 10:00am.
Herbert Case
Herbert Brewster Case of Poipu passed away on July 31, 2014 at the age of 92. Born on August 9, 1921 in Hollywood California, he was a U.S. Merchant Marine Veterans of WWII. Retired from Civil Service and worked at Port Allen on Navy retrieval boats.
He is survived by his sons, Jeff Case of Hilo and Gary Case of Poipu. Grandchildren, Maile Lambeth of Honolulu & Tia Anthony Case of Hilo. 4 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2014 10:00 a.m. at Poipu Beach Park.
Kyson Contrades
Kyson Kaleo “Smackey” Contrades of Anahola died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 20 on August 6, 2014. Born on January 6, 1994 in Lihue, he was a student at KCC for Auto body and fender.
He is survived by his parents, Kamala & Shelley Contrades, brothers, Kyle Contrades and Kameron “Kaipo” Contrades, and numerous uncles, aunts, and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at the Garden Island Mortuary Chapel in Lawai from 8:30 to 10:00 am. Service at 10 am; cremation to follow. Casual attire is suggested. Condolences can be sent to P.O. Box 577 Anahola, HI 96703.

Barbara Sullivan
Barbara Sullivan passed away at the age of 63. Born on April 18, 1951.
She is survived by her daughters, Ashley Cameron and Rebecca Cameron.

Cheryl Lovell-Obatake
Cheryl Mary Ululani Lovell-Obatake of Nawiliwili, Kauai passed away on August 1, 2014 at the age of 60. Born on March 5, 1954 in Waimea, Kauai. She was a cultural monitor with a love for land, water and culture.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leslie and Ida Lovell, and brother Leslie Lovell.
She is survived by her husband James Obatake Jr., daughter, Maureen “Kanani” (Albert) Lovell-Obatake, son, Leslie (Brandee) Lovell-Obatake, stepmother, Beverly Manner, sister Puanani Holt, and stepsister Karen Manner. Grandchildren, Keana, Lanakila, Nakoa, Kamalewa, and Maka`ala. Numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and friends.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2014 at Nawiliwili Beach Park, 4 p.m. The family request casual attire.
Sylvia Yasutake
Sylvia K. Yasutake of Hanapepe passed away on August 9, 2014 at Garden Isle Health Care at age 71. Born on August 28, 1942 in Honolulu, she was a School Health Nurse.
Preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Yasutake.
She is survived by her son Jon (Jeanne) Yasutake of Honolulu, daughter Jaime (Bob) Yasutake of Hanapepe, brother, Warren (Kathrine) Takagi of Honolulu, and sister, Lynn (Richard) Okamura of Honolulu, two grandchilren, and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held together with husband Kenneth Yasutake on August 16, 2014 at the Garden Island Mortuary Chapel in Lawai, with visitation at 2pm and service at 3pm. Casual attire is suggested.
