Forty-three medals divided by 22 Kauai Junior Lifeguards in Virginia Beach.
That was the tally collected by the Kauai Junior Lifeguards, 11-time state champions, during the national competition where nearly 1,500 Junior Lifeguards from around the country gathered Tuesday at Virginia Beach in Virginia.
According to Dr. Monty Downs of the Kauai Lifeguard Association, the 22 Kauai youngsters earned 12 gold medals, 11 silver medals, 14 bronze medals, and six copper medals.
“Stunning performance,” Downs wrote.
The Kauai Junior Lifeguards wrapped up a busy week, earning its 11th consecutive state championship Saturday at Kalapaki Beach before boarding a flight to Virginia Sunday for the national championships.
“The statewide championship was quite spectacular,” Downs said. “Although Kauai won its 11th in a row, there were great champions from all the islands.”
The Kauai Junior Lifeguards are scheduled to return tonight aboard United Airlines.
