Catching some big ones

LIHUE — More than 370 people, including 164 keiki, or young anglers below 14 years old, took to the shorelines of Kauai over the weekend.

“Everything was geared for the children,” said Jarrett Chytka, the Kmart store manager, under the 17th annual tournament.

Halia Vicoy Fuimano topped the Keiki 4-8 division with a nenue which tipped the scale at 8.65 pounds.

Shaedon Kuhlman took the Keiki 9-12 division with a toau that weighed in at 3.75 pounds, and Jordan Nakamura topped the Keiki 13-17 division with an ulua that tipped the scales at 16 pounds, nearly four pounds heavier than Kobe Viloria’s 12.5-pounder.

Another Nakamura, Kristle, pocketed $100 for having the heaviest combined weight at 17.33 pounds, more than six pounds more than Aaron Yoshimitsu (11.26 pounds), and Jerry Albarado (8.02 pounds).

Ricky Oyama, also placing third in the oio category on a 4.475-pounder, topped the special barbless category with an ulua which tipped the scales at 10.64 pounds for a $200 reward.

Gordon Higa pocketed $100 for his 4.25-pound oio in the barbless category with Yoshimitsu getting $50 for his oio which weighed in at 2.455 pounds.
