HANALEI — Nearly 80 Kauai Junior Lifeguard students gathered at the Hanalei Pier for the Island Finals of the water safety program which started June 5.
“They’re all eligible to return for the state competition which will take place Aug. 2 at Kalapaki Beach,” said Eugene Ancheta, a Kauai Junior Lifeguard instructor. “We start practice (today) at Kalapaki.”
The Kauai Junior Lifeguards are 10-time reigning state champions and will host the island finals just a day before boarding a plane for the national competition.
Kaeo Kruse, earlier setting a Hawaii High School Athletic Association track and field record for Kamehameha Schools, was joined by Kamu Nobriga, Saber Fairbanks, Hikari Oberman, and Andrew Herr to lead the Boys 15-17 Iron Guard.
“That’s our national team,” said Kaimi Kaneholani, a Junior Lifeguard instructor. “We’re pushing them pretty hard because they’re going.”
The Kauai Junior Lifeguard is sponsored in part by the County of Kauai, the Kauai Lifeguard Association, the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association, and numerous community sponsors who care about Kauai’s youth.
