Kauai all-star team takes second place at state tourney

Following the Kauai Protect Our Nation’s Youth Mustang division title, teams from Lihue and West Kauai formed an all-star team to participate in the state tournament held on Maui.

Led by Lihue coach John Cox and West Kauai coaches Kevin Akita and Mark Malapit, the Kauai Mustang All-Stars finished second after dropping its opening match 6-3 to MKYBL.

Julie Akita, in an email, said following the opening-day loss, the team fought back to make it to the championship game where they fell to MKYBL for the second time in the tournament.

Coming from its opening 6-3 loss, Kauai roared back for an 18-8 win over Maui B and held off Hilo 7-5 in game 3. Kauai edged Maui A, 1-0 in game 4 before getting past Windward Oahu A, 7-3, to advance to the title game where Kauai fell to MKYBL for the second time, 7-2, for the runner-up pennant.
