HONOLULU — Waimea High School’s softball team lost to Nanakuli of Oahu 8-5 in the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II state championship game Friday evening at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Menehune pitcher Kiani Kamakea hit a solo home run in the sixth inning to give Waimea a 5-4 lead.
With two outs in the top of the seventh inning, Nanakuli rallied to score four runs.
With two runners on base and one out, Nanakuli pitcher Chyanne Koko struck out Waimea’s last two batters to end the game.
“They had a couple of key hits that turned the game around,” said Waimea head coach Teddy Perreira in a phone interview. “Discipline hurt our team, chasing high pitches and stuff.
“The girls did well. They didn’t give up and they played hard,” he added.
Kamakea pitched all seven innings, recording six strikeouts and eight walks. She allowed six hits and six earned runs.
Kamakea also scored two runs in the game.
Sienna Santiago, Bailey San Agustin-Nordmeier and Saecha Padasdao-Oyamot each scored a run for Waimea.
Alyssa Miyamoto had two hits in three at bats.
“Our goal was to reach the championship game. We reached the goal but we didn’t finish. We didn’t get the big goal,” Perreira said. “We had a great season. We had a pretty young team. We’ll have some returning next year.”
