Kapaa’s Bryden Salvador was the sole Kauai Interscholastic Federation golfer to medal at the David S. Ishii Foundation Hawaii High School 2014 State Golf Championships which wrapped up Thursday at the Turtle Bay courses on Oahu.
Earning the open spot following a two-day qualifying round, Salvador finished 13th overall in the boys’ field following a 76 (39-37) during the final round at the Turtle Bay Palmer Golf Course.
The score was a two-stroke improvement over his opening round where he carded a 78 (39-39) for a 36-hole 154 and sole control of 13th place.
Kauai High School’s Jamie Amimoto, trailing Salvador by three strokes (41-40-81) following the opening round, rebounded to a 79 (38-41) during the final round for a two-day 160 and 29th in the field, leading the Red Raiders to a sixth place finish in team play at 676 (339-337).
Trevor Kua, finishing below Amimoto at 85 (42-43) during the opening round, rebounded to a 77 (38-39) during the second round for a two-day 162 and 33rd among the boys’ field.
Kauai’s Hiilani Alana pulled ahead of individualists Naea Oda of Kapaa during the opening round, finishing at 84 (44-40) and improved to 82 (44-38) on the final round Tuesday to lead the Kauai girls team to an eighth place finish (271-278-549).
Oda, the sole individualist who earned the spot for Kapaa, trailed Alana through the two rounds, and finished a stroke behind her during the final round at 83 (43-40). She finished 36th overall at 168 (85-83).
