ANAHOLA — The Kauai Farmers Union will be hosting its second meeting at 6 tonight at the Anahola Clubhouse.
Topics include a discussion on what the Farmers Union stands for and how the community can work with the union to support family farms and local values around food security and self-reliance. Early stage plans for the Kilauea Agricultural Park Complex will also be discussed.
The group’s first meeting in March had over 50 attendees and the established Maui chapter sees over 200 attendees for their events.
The Kauai Farmers Union advocates for the sovereign right of farmers to create and sustain vibrant agricultural communities for the benefit of all through cooperation, education and legislation.
“There’s been a huge interest across the island in creating a resource for family farmers and food producers,” said Ray Maki, president. “On the most remote landmass in the world where we currently import 90 percent of our food, it’s critical that we build a stronger, more sustainable food system.”
