Waimea High School alumnae Ronda and Crystal Chun have been added to this year’s Menehune Legacy Hall of Honor class.
“They were outstanding athletes,” said Menehune Legacy Hall of Honor chairman Basilio Fuertes. “They were good students, well-behaved, coachable and competitive.
“Both girls are really humble … They were well-liked in the community. Their parents raised them to be good people,” he added.
The Chun sisters are remembered as Waimea’s pitcher and catcher duo in 1988. During the state tournament that year, Ronda pitched a perfect game with Crystal behind home plate and was named most valuable player. Ronda ended her KIF career with a 33-0 record.
Crystal then switched to playing pitcher in 1990. That year, she delivered the game-winning hit that won her team the state softball championship.
“It’s an honor,” Crystal said, who now takes the name Shimatsu. “It means a lot to me and my sister.”
The Chun sisters join fellow inductees: four-letter athlete and former UH volleyball player Leah Karratti, 2002-04 KIF football player of the year and former NFL linebacker Jordan Dizon, former UH guard and linebacker Daniel Izuka and former UH swimmer and Western Athletic Conference Academic All-American Corey Carroll.
The induction ceremony will take place at the Waimea High School front lawn at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
